It Costs More Than You Know to Produce Your LM-2 Report Year-after-Year
Labor Unions who comply with annual LM-2 reporting face a substantial work-effort to gather and consolidate the information needed.
Attempting to create the LM-2 report manually requires massive hours of your resources time, makes you vulnerable to errors, and is one of the biggest challenges for Labor Unions to pull together year after year.
Multiply the hours spent collecting data from various sources, meticulously transforming the data to meet cash basis and special requirements, and correcting errors from manual processing to identify a major repeatable expense.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What changed with the new LM-2 reporting requirements?
The Department of Labor's final rule introduces the most significant updates to LM-2 reporting in more than 20 years. Some of the biggest changes include:
-
A new LM-2 Long Form for labor organizations with annual receipts of $40 million or more.
-
More detailed schedules for reporting receipts and disbursements.
-
Separate reporting for organizing activities and contract administration.
-
Expanded disclosure requirements for certain transactions, vendors, and affiliates.
-
Updated filing thresholds for LM-2, LM-3, and LM-4.
-
Elimination of certain officer disbursement reporting exceptions.
These changes are designed to improve transparency by requiring more detailed, transaction-level financial reporting.

2. Do we now have to file the new LM 2 Long Form?
Not necessarily. The new LM-2 Long Form is only required for labor organizations with $40 million or more in annual receipts. According to the Department of Labor, only about 100 labor organizations nationwide are expected to meet this threshold.
If your organization has less than $40 million in annual receipts, you'll continue filing either the revised LM-2, LM-3, or LM-4, depending on your annual receipts. Even if you don't file the Long Form, the updated reporting requirements may still affect your organization, so it's important to review the new rules before your next reporting cycle.

3. Which form do we file now — LM 2, LM 3, or LM 4?
The form your organization files is based on its annual receipts.

Annual Receipts of $40 million or more: Required to file the LM-2 Long Form
Annual Receipts of $350,000–$39,999,999: Required to file the Revised LM-2
Annual Receipts of $25,000–$349,999: Required to file the LM-3 (or LM-2 by choice)
Annual Receipts under $25,000: Required to file the LM-4 (or LM-3/LM-2 by choice)

Because the Department of Labor increased the filing thresholds, some labor organizations that currently file the LM-2 may now qualify to file the shorter LM-3 instead. Reviewing your annual receipts now can help you determine which form you'll be required to file under the new rules.

4. When do the new rules take effect?
The new rules became effective July 1, 2026, but they apply only to labor organizations whose fiscal year begins on or after July 1, 2026.
Because LM reports are filed after the close of a fiscal year, the earliest organizations will file under the revised requirements after June 30, 2027. This gives labor organizations time to review their accounting processes and prepare before their first filing under the new rules.

5. How can we prepare our accounting system for the new LM-2 requirements?
The new reporting requirements place greater emphasis on detailed, itemized financial reporting. Rather than waiting until year-end to organize transactions, labor organizations should begin reviewing how financial information is captured throughout the year.

Organizations should:
-
Review their filing threshold under the new rules.
-
Evaluate whether their chart of accounts supports the new reporting categories.
-
Ensure transactions can be properly categorized throughout the year.
-
Begin planning for any additional reporting requirements before their first filing.

For organizations using Microsoft Dynamics GP or Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Quick LM-2 from Micro Force helps simplify this process by capturing LM-2 reporting information during normal accounting activities. Instead of relying on spreadsheets or manual year-end coding, Quick LM-2 helps your team prepare accurate reporting data throughout the year, improving compliance and efficiency and reducing the workload during filing season.
